HIGHLIGHTS OF 2011 AT GORDON BOWLING CLUB

Flora and Cyril Achieve Fame

The North Shore Times recently published a very nice article on our two super-veterans, Flora Potter and Cyril Sutton who, despite a combined age of 191 years, decided to take up the challenge and enter the club's Mixed Pairs!

Interviewed by the local paper's sports editor Torin Chen, the club's oldest lady and gentleman bowler provided some good humoured and very sporting comments.

But because it's not a fairy-tale, it didn't have a fairy-tale ending. In wet, heavy conditions they competed strongly at first against Kay and Fred Miniter but eventually tired to go out in the first round. Still an inspiring effort.

Gordon Women Win Grade 4 Pennant in Cliff-Hanger

Winners are grinners and here they are! Gordon's triumphant Grade 4 side, from left to right: Kay Miniter, Marion Clark, Barbara de Barkas, Robyn Howard, Joan Renauld, Olwyn McAllister, Sonia Desmond, Traude Savage. (Jenny Huckson, a regular member of the side through the season, had set out on her travels around the Top End by the time of the Group playoff.)

WHAT A FINISH TO THE SEASON!

In a truly exciting final against Manly Central, Gordon's Grade 4 Women held their collective nerve to secure a memorable win, and a Pennant Flag that now hangs proudly in the club room.

With the match all but won after 40 ends, suddenly a 6-shot lead to Gordon disappeared in the final end over two rinks and the match was forced into tie-breaker ends. However, both our teams remained calm under pressure to win their extra ends and claim a well earned victory.

So now, it's on to Dubbo for the State Playoffs in August. Congatulations to all players!

Century 21 Autumn Carnival 2011

After two weeks of incessant showers interspersed with rain periods, it was with great relief that we welcomed a cool but dry day for our annual Century 21 Autumn Carnival. Chris, our greenkeeper, did a magnificent job under difficult conditions to have all three greens in good playable condition for the big event. We welcomed 36 men's triples teams, representing some 26 different clubs and all enjoyed a typical day of competitive bowls played in great spirit. The Gordon ladies served up a superb hot lunch that really hit the spot on such a cool day.

In the afternoon, 18 teams played off in the "Winners' Pool", with an eventual dead heat for most wins and shots. The winners on a countback were a Warrawee combination of Chris Wood, John Bryan and Bruce Mason, with runners-up a Gordon team of Steven Maas, Brian Levy and Kandiah Siva. The highly sought after raffle prize of a magnum of Scotch was won by Rocky Davis, last seen leaving with a large group of friends!
