2010 Bowling Highlights at the Gordon Club

Gordon Club Stages Another Succesful Century 21 Superbowl

There were tense faces early at Gordon's annual Carnival on the Labor Day Public Holiday, as play got under way under grey skies following overnight rain. Worries mounted when a heavy shower around 9.30 am forced a 10-minute interruption. Then however, the sky began to clear, frowns all vanished, and 114 bowlers from clubs all around Sydney enjoyed the friendly and competitive day of bowling that always prevails at our Century 21 Superbowl.

With three rounds of bowls completed and the scores all tallied, the winners were a team from St Johns Park. Pictured at right being presented with the Century 21 trophy by Gordon Men's President David Magnusson is the winning team of Rocco Bakulic, Barry Lancaster and Paul Girdler. Close runner-up was a Gordon team of Bill Price, Helen Stromsmoe and John Aldersley.

Historic Win to Gordon in Ku-Ring-Gai Shield

Gordon had a resounding success on Saturday September 25 at Turramurra Bowling Club, winning the Ku-ring-gai Shield for the 1st time in the 20-year history of this event. Known as the "top ten" competition, 10 selected players from each club in the Ku-ring-gai council area compete in one match each of Singles, Pairs, Triples and Fours. This year, Gordon won three of the 4 matches and lost by only a small margin in triples to secure the trophy.

Interestingly, one or two members of our team were at Pymble Club when it won the first two Ku-ring-gai shields in the 1990's

Pictured left with the Shield are four of Gordon's winning side.

Our annual Century 21 Autumn Carnival on May 3 was again a great success, attracting 38 teams from many clubs in the Sydney metropolitan region.

Early threats of rain soon vanished and conditions were perfect for a day of competitive bowls. Quite a few spectators came along and were entertained by some skilful and occasionally aggressive play by bowlers of all ages.

The morning play was followed by a wonderful lunch organised by the Gordon Women's Bowling Club. Then, in the afternoon, winners played winners for the major prize money, the aim being to win a second time by as large a margin as possible.

With all games completed and tallied, it was time to present the prize money generously donated by our principal sponsor, Century 21 Cordeau Marshall . John Kidd and Sarah Davis made the presentation to several successful teams, the overall winners' prize going to a team from North Sydney Leagues club, skipped by Tom Nathan.

Gordon Team Runners-Up in Zone Reserve Fours

It was a great performance by the Gordon Team of John Swann, David Magnusson, Brian Levy and Peter Larcombe to reach the final of the Zone Reserve 4's. Played over three weekends because of  rain-interrruptions, with Keith Handley ably substituting for John Swann on the second occasion, Gordon defeated teams from Dee Why, Lane Cove, Northbridge and Warringah before going down to an experienced Belrose team in a closely contested final. Players with Pennant Gradings 5-7 in the 2009 season were eligible to compete in this event, so the Gordon team with 4 of our 5 representatives drawn from last year's Grade 7 side achieved a "giant-killer" reputation.

Century 21 Australia Day Carnival

Winners of the Century 21 Australia Day Carnival: Brian Blow, Shirley Curtin (skip) and Rex Hustler receive the trophy from President David Magnusson.

We welcomed 62 men and women members to our annual "Men invite the Women" summer carnival held on Australia Day 2010, Tuesday January 26.

Sydney turned on a sticky 30 degrees plus day which tested the endurance of our bowlers but good bowls and good friendship prevailed. Lunch in the air-conditioned club room provided a welcome break.

As always the day concluded with some very tense single bowl playoffs. However, the team of Brian Blow, Rex Hustler and Shirley Curtin played with aplomb, resisting  a strong challenge from Sam Leon, Nola Poyitt and Jim Conolly to win the prized Century 21 trophy for 2010.
